An Update

A week from today, I’ll be taking to the skies again on a well-deserved sojourn to Southeast Asia. The past two months have been packed with non-stop work and activities, and a few days of pleasant, warm Asian energy will provide some respite from my otherwise dull grey Northeastern lifestyle.

While the Rutgers men’s basketball team has fallen horribly in Big East play, my time with the alumni association has been eventful. With seven “dorm storms” scheduled over the next three months, a slew of committee meetings, and any other activities occurring, my evenings have been uneventful. All the while, my committments to the project I’m co-leading at work have consumed most of my time.

The good news is all these endeavours are progressing well. The flipside? The reward for good work is more work. Still, the alterternatives are no work. So, I’ll take it.

I’m not really in to the whole hot tub thing while it’s 13 degrees outside, personally.

Posting Glory

So, why the rash of postings this evening?

Simple. I only have four more episodes of season 3 of 24 to watch. I finished a fair amount of work before 10 pm, and I was neither sick nor had to go out. This hasn’t been true all of January, but at some point pressures have to ease, at least temporarily.

Two Feet of Hype

For the past two years running, my family has bought a subscription to the professional Accuweather website. Several of the meterologists there provide daily (and more often, sometimes) columns, along with daily videos on short- and long-term forecasts. Reading the models, the long-range forecaster, Joe Bastardi, was calling for a huge storm this weekend as far out as a week ago, while many of his contemporaries were barely aware of a storm. So imagine my surprise and amusement today as some of them have now increased their anticipated snow totals even above what he was talking about at the time.

I hope Joe’s feeling good today, and come Sunday, he’s feeling even better.

Happy Happy Joy Joy

In a moment of cultural intrigue, I stumbled on this video earlier today. Definitely a shocking and provacative celebration from my prudish American background.

Downtime

Sorry about that. Some phantom, unexplained Java server errors took the server offline for the past two days. The ghost in the system somewhere decided it wanted a few holidays, I suppose. Restarting everything didn’t fix the problem, until tonight.

Now that it’s working again it’s time for some downtime of my own.

Water

We were in a restaurant. I don’t remember who “we” was, nor where the restaurant was located. I can’t recall the name, but I do know it had a light, airy feel to it. The sun was warm that day, and there were a number of plants scattered about, giving the place a natural feel of white and blue and green.

And there was the fishtank, too. A giant tank, saltwater, most likely, with many strange fish. You could hear the water running, as it splashed in to the tank. It was mesmerizing.

As I stoo watching, a felt a sudden pain. And then I woke up and ran to the bathroom.

Media

In my reading of the tsunami coverage, I stumbled across a WaPo piece I found a strong attempt to describe what such situations are like.

Uncivilised

I started yesterday between 3 and 5 in the afternoon. I can’t recall exactly when, and truth be told it doesn’t much matter. I only intended to take a few turns, kill a little time before I went out. Instead, the numbness spread throughout my head. Before I knew it it was six, then eight, the midnight. I kept thinking I had to eat something, but I couldn’t tear myself away.

It was 5 a.m. by the time I finally stopped playing Civilization III and slept.

Merry Christmas

Christmas has arrived. The weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas have quickly passed, with carols sung, presents bought, and holiday decorations plastered everywhere. Offices are closing, work has slowed down, and the tree has been decorated. We gather with our closest friends and family, and the spirit of giving and of love takes wing.

I saw the most adorable scene today while I was picking up presents for my parents. A young child was helping her mother behind the counter at the candy shop, boxing my candy and wrapping the boxes. When she spilled the first one all over the floor by accident, she apologized profusely. But how could I be angry? I had to stifle my laughter, and when I left, I wanted to pay even more. The service may have been a little slower, but it was friendlier than most any I’ve received.
